Medicare has four parts because apparently health insurance needed its own alphabet. A. B. C. D. It sounds complicated... So... let’s keep it simple.
Think hospital.
Medicare Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and certain home health services. Most people receive premium-free Part A because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes long enough while working. For someone qualifying based on age, that generally means about 10 years of Medicare-taxed work. Just remember:
Part A = Hospital.
Think doctors and outpatient care.
Part B helps cover things like doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment, and many other medically necessary services.³ Put Part A + Part B together, and you have what Medicare calls Original Medicare. Easy enough.
Part A + Part B = Original Medicare
This is where people sometimes get lost. Part C is Medicare Advantage.
Instead of receiving your Part A and Part B benefits directly through Original Medicare, you enroll in a Medicare-approved private insurance plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage, and many offer additional benefits such as dental, vision, and hearing. Depending on the plan, you may also have provider networks, copays, deductibles, and other rules. So Part C isn't another benefit you're supposed to stack on top of Parts A and B. It's another way to receive your Medicare coverage.
Part C = Medicare Advantage
Thankfully, Medicare made this one pretty easy to remember. D = Drugs.
Part D helps pay for covered prescription medications. You can get Part D through a stand-alone Medicare drug plan alongside Original Medicare, or it may be included in a Medicare Advantage plan. Different plans cover different medications and have their own formularies, premiums, and cost-sharing, so the cheapest-looking plan isn't automatically the best one for you.
| Part D = Drugs. It is the simplest way to remember what this part covers.

Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
An alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private companies, including Parts A, B, and usually D.
Covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines).
See? The alphabet wasn't nearly as scary... And that's a conversation worth having before you simply pick whatever showed up in your mailbox.
Knowing what A, B, C, and D mean is the easy part. The next step is figuring out how Medicare fits your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and situation.
